Friends in sky-high places

KARTER Jay Goodwin hopes advice from Red Bull Formula One superstar Mark Webber will give his 2012 title bid wings.

This is the year that Sale’s Jay Goodwin has vowed to make his breakthrough - and he’s making friends in high places to help his dream come true.

Recently, he joined some of Britain’s brightest motor racing prospects at the Porsche Human Performance Centre for their exclusive ‘Get Race Fit’ event, hosted by Grand Prix driver, Mark Webber.

Webber revealed that he had only landed back in the UK from a trip to Australia two hours previously. He then joined Jay and a number of other up and coming youngsters in a seminar on nutrition.

Jay said: “Mark joined in and was giving us all some good tips on what to eat and drink before and during a race weekend. He recommended soup as being particularly good for kart racers because we spend a lot of time hanging around between practice sessions and races. He seemed to know exactly what it’s like being a karter here in winter.”

Armed with valuable advice for ‘Eight Healthy Eating Habits’, the Sale driver headed over to a yoga session and tried his hand at some stretching exercises.

In the afternoon, he travelled to another part of the Silverstone complex to take part in a series of gym and a state-of-the-art racing car simulator challenge at the iZone Driver Performance centre .

“I’m buzzing!” he beamed after the day had concluded. “Mark and the Porsche human performance guys have really got me fired up for the year. I learned so much from Mark about what it takes to be one of the world’s best drivers. He’s absolutely dedicated and a really nice bloke. I’m going to put into practice what he told me and hopefully, I can enjoy my best season ever.”
