Golf - All set for Dunham action

THE draw has been made for one of the top inter club knock out competitions in the region which will involve local professionals and the top amateur players in their clubs.

The Manchester Alliance Dunham Forest Trophy has no equals in the country as it features the professional and the top six amateurs locked in singles match-play involving 100 clubs.

The aim is to make finals day at Dunham Forest Golf Club next September for the semi-finals and finals involving the last four teams.

Flixton Golf Club have a decent recent record in Alliance KO competitions and their experienced professional Mike Stewart will be leading his team out in the preliminary round at Whitefield as they look to make the last 64.

There is also a local derby at Sale where the home team entertain Trafford rivals Acre Gate who will be looking to cause an upset.

Dunham Forest have a tough trip to Chorley, who are recent winners of the competition and feature county players in their ranks.

Ashton-on-Mersey host another nine-hole club in Glossop and Ashton pro Kris Andrews (pictured) is confident that his talented team can go a long way in this year’s competition.

Hale are on their travels to Haydock Park and Altrincham visit Heaton Moor.

Through to the last 64 with byes are Davyhulme Park and Ringway.

Davyhulme as holders of the Alliance Mens Foursomes, sponsored by City Glass, will host the 2012 final and they have a bye into the last 64.

The draw for our other local clubs is: Flixton v Bury, Blackburn v Ashton-on-Mersey, Sale v Birchwood and through to round one with byes are Acre Gate, Altrincham and Dunham Forest.

Back at Ashton their men were in two singles Stableford competitions.

Graham Hegg led in the first one with 41 points from Steve Warrington 39, and Jeff Ashton 38.

Andy Fardon topped the second after winning a cpo on 45 points with Jeff Ashton with Axel Nielsen a point off the pace.

Singles Stablefords were also the order of the day for William Wroe Vets with Jim Whittaker the main man with 41 points from Syed Ashmi 40 in the first one.

Stan Yates was the big gun in the second with 42 points to see off Bryan Batley by a point.

The Davyhulme ‘Fives’ had the fab four of Paul Barton, Dave Smith, John Drinkwater and Peter Murray on top of the pile with 77 points.

Park’s ladies played a Texas Scramble with the team of Carol Whitehead, Jackie Foy and Barbara Prole leading in with 47.87.

Sale ladies played a 14-hole singles Stableford and Cynthia Hammond was out on her own with 38 points, well clear of Jackie O’Donnell 33 and Bridget Elmore and Bernadett Rudman, both 30.

Sale’s men played a Four Man Team Stableford and M Sleater, D O’Carroll, Alan Brunton and J Eastham coasted to victory with 124points, a massive 23 clear of Len Wood, Derek Chadwick, Tony Ball and Colin McIntyre.
