Rugby - Altrincham Kersal Junior Colts v Anselmians
3:17pm Tuesday 7th September 2010
ALTRINCHAM Kersal Junior Colts got their season in NW Colts Division B off to a flying start with a thoroughly deserved 29-0 victory over Anselmians on the Wirral.
Having weathered some early Anselmians pressure they soon began to assert their authority. Hard work and running from the eager forwards, particularly Tom Moncur, Dom McGrory and captain Tom Smart, was however not rewarded due to a catalogue of knock-ons and dropped passes, which meant the score was 0-0 until some 25 minutes on the clock. At this point an early contender for 'bizarre try of the season' occurred. Concerted pressure on the Anselmians defence led to a wild pass, which somehow landed in the grateful arms of Ed Backhouse in the try area who simply put the ball down for the first score. Half time arrived with a 5-0 lead.
The second half started in the same vein, with Kersal forwards regularly making yards and providing a solid platform for the backs to exploit. However a combination of more patience, better handling and greater fitness meant that the advantage was finally converted to points. Four further tries were scored by Sam Moncur, Tom Moncur, Dom McGrory and the move of the match finished by Zac Stephenson. Having struggled earlier to judge the effects of the wind, Jack Emerson ditched the kicking tee and stuck the last two conversions over for a 29-0 scoreline.
