Football - Trafford v Leigh Genesis

11:56am Monday 6th September 2010

TRAFFORD 4 LEIGH GENESIS 1 TRAFFORD stretched their unbeaten start to the season to five games with a comfortable 4-1 league victory over Leigh Genesis at Shawe View.

Garry Vaughan’s young team made the perfect start when, after just three minutes, Joe Shaw split the Leigh defence allowing Scott Barlow to break clear and cooly slot the ball past the advancing Denis Barlow.

In the 9th minute Leigh almost snatched an equaliser when home keeper Tom Read pushed a John Lawless header against the crossbar and shortly afterwards Scott Barlow just failed to connect with an in-swinging free kick by the dynamic Shaw.

Tommy Turner squandered a great chance to make it two following a weak back pass by Danny Lyons, goalkeeper Barlow leaving his line to save bravely at Turner’s feet, but the prolific Turner made amends in the 33rd minute with the simplest of tap-ins after Leigh failed to clear another free kick from the left. This was Turner’s fifth goal in as many games following his arrival from New Mills.

In the 37th minute left midfielder Warren Collier swung in a superb cross from the left but Danny White headed well wide with the goal at his mercy.

The opening stages of the second half were rather scrappy but in the 51st minute the game was as good as over when Trafford right back Kyle Harrop sent in a long throw that Leigh failed to clear and debutant Cedric Krou shot home from the tightest of angles.

Joe Shaw produced a brilliant last ditch tackle to thwart Leigh dangerman John Lawless in the 55th minute but the visiting skipper reduced the arrears four minutes later when he cracked a low free kick just inside the far post from 20 yards.

Scott Barlow was foiled by a save from point blank range by his namesake Denis two minutes later but the effervescent little striker made it 4-1 in the 67th minute when he cracked a low angled drive inside the right hand post from 15 yards.

Danny White fired inches wide as Trafford chased a fifth but in the 70th minute home keeper Tom Read produced a magnificent save to deny Kieron Molyneux as the Leigh midfielder broke clear.

A brilliant chip from fully forty yards by Joe Shaw cannoned back into play off the crossbar and in the closing minutes Scott Barlow was denied a hat-trick on two occasions by superb saves by Denis Barlow.

The game came to a close with Trafford delighted with a victory that moves them up to third place in the Evo-Stik League Division One North although they are faced with a very difficult away fixture at Chester on Wednesday night.

On Saturday Trafford travel to play Stocksbridge Park Steels in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup and on Tuesday night they entertain Durham City at Shawe View, kick off 7-45 p.m.
