New vision for Flixton Sports and Cricket Club
9:00am Wednesday 22nd February 2012

FLIXTON Sports and Cricket Club is embarking on an ambitious project with the University of Salford to become a top facility for community events.
The club opened its doors to more than 160 university students last Friday for a question and answer session with Stretford and Urmston MP Kate Green and Derek Morgan from Lancashire County Cricket Board.
Also in attendance were George Devlin, Labour representative for Davyhulme West, and club president Alan Embleton.
It is hoped the scheme for a new club building will be realised with the help of Salford’s internationally renowned School of the Built Environment.
The aim of it is to provide a range of sports and other facilities to members, the wider community and schools, in partnership with businesses, governing bodies and Trafford Council.
The project will help to provide work-based learning within an academic framework for students at the school.
Senior lecturer Eric Stokes said: “The school is extremely pleased to be working with the club to produce a vision for their future success, one that looks forward into the 22nd century.”
Ms Green added: “This is such an innovative and exciting project for the club and the local area, in addition to the range of facilities it will bring to the area it also provides inspiration to the local community with its vision for the future.”
The school has worked on similar projects in the past that are now coming to fruition.
Under this project, students are working in competing teams to deliver the best plans.
The plans include coming up with a building design and a funding and construction programme.
The students will soon be entering the final stages of the competition, to be held in Trafford on May 4.
There, members of the public will be invited to view and comment on the 10 best solutions.
Following deliberation by the club committee and Ms Green, a winner will be announced on the same day.
Executive councillor Jonathan Coupe said: "It is great to see the enthusiasm and ambition that Flixton Sports and Cricket Club is demonstrating in wanting to improve and establish itself as a leading sports facility in Trafford, and I look forward to seeing how the project progresses."
