Centenary celebrations for Marion

AN ALTRINCHAM resident who has battled health problems for more than half a century celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday.

Marion Gwilliam was joined by her family for the big day at Woodend Nursing Home in Altrincham.

She was born two months before the Titanic sank and more than two years before the First World War began.

Marion’s daughter, Judy Longworth, said it was an ‘amazing’ achievement in view of her health issues.

Marion suffered a cerebral aneurysm 53 years ago that paralysed her down her left side, and she has been bedridden for 31 years.

Judy said: “She must have a very strong constitution and has been well cared for over the years, as well as having a very loving and supportive family.”

Marion’s late husband was Peter, a chartered accountant who was a keen member at Bowdon Rugby Club and a church warden at St Peter’s Church, Hale.

Before suffering a cerebral aneurysm, Marion was a volunteer for the League of Friends at Wythenshawe Hospital. She enjoyed all sport and reading.

The couple lived in the Hale area throughout their married life.

She has three children, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Marion has been a resident at Woodend for about 15 years.
