Alice celebrates 100th milestone

11:40am Sunday 5th September 2010

WHEN Alice Parkinson was born in 1910, television and internet didn’t exist, space travel was the stuff of science fiction and Herbert Asquith was Prime Minister.

The world has changed a lot since then, and as Alice celebrates her 100th birthday this week, it’s an ideal time to reflect on a century living in Greater Manchester.

Born in September 1910 in Moss Side, Alice initially trained as a secretary and worked for an accountanty firm. When war broke out in 1939 she went to work for the Manchester Ship Canal Company. Here, they shipped out everything from food to Lancaster bombers to help the army fighting abroad.

Alice and her family has previously lived in Rostherne Avenue in Old Trafford, but during the war the house was severly bombed. forcing the family to move to Chorltonville. Alice settled there for the next 68 years.

After the war she began work at the Rubber Regenerding Company in Trafford Park. However her real passion was for scouting - in her spare time, Alice volunteered with local Scouting regiments and was a Cubmaster for the 9th Sale Scouts, based on Trinity Road in Sale Moor.

When she retired, Alice worked voluntarily as a dinner lady at Brookburn Primary School in Chorlton for a few years.

Now, she is a doting aunt to three nieces and a nephew, 11 great nieces and nephews and one great-great nephew. They and The Messenger all wish her a very happy birthday.
